South Side Homes & Real Estate

south side homes for salePittsburgh’s South Side is an urban community that runs along the southern banks of the Monongahela River, between downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland.  This vibrant community attracts young professionals and down-sizing baby boomers alike with its abundant attractions and unparalleled convenience, where residents can walk or bike to work, shop and dine.

The South Side began as the center of the glass industry in the early 1800’s, and later as the hub of the iron and steel industry.  Many of the row houses that were originally homes to immigrant glass and iron workers have now been refurbished as hip urban town homes.  In terms of architecture, you’ll find three story row homes with the Second Empire and Italianate styling that typified American construction in the 1800’s to be relatively plentiful in this neighborhood.  There are also several newer town home communities along the riverfront.

East Carson Street is certainly the center of life in the South Side and has been recognized by the National Trust as a “Great American Main Street”. It is also one of the few surviving Victorian era business districts in the country.  Now lined with shops, restaurants, galleries, and night life, its personality is constantly lively and energetic.

Follow the many runners, walkers, and bikers down 18th Street towards the river, and you’ll find the entrance to Riverfront Park.  The Riverfront Park Bike Trail is a key link in the Great Allegheny Passage, the rail trail that runs between Pittsburgh and Cumberland Maryland. Singles, couples and families come here to bike, walk or simply to relax along the river bank.  There is also a public boat launch at 19th Street.

Home prices vary widely in the South Side, from fixer-uppers at $150,000 to luxury new construction town homes in the $700’s, and almost everything in between.   Off street parking is at a premium here…plan to spend at least $250,000 for a property with off street parking.  Properties in the “Flats” offer convenience to all of the communities varied attractions, whereas homes on the “Slopes” typically offer incredible views of downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland.

The South Side is served by the City of Pittsburgh School District and a variety of private school options as well.

Transportation to downtown Pittsburgh can be made on foot, by bike, or by bus.  The drive downtown or to Oakland can be made in 5 minutes or less.
